Further info
Richard Strauss's fabulously successful opera Der Rosenkavalier is set in the glittering world of eighteen century Vienna, while its musical language draws upon the Viennese waltzes of the nineteenth century, which appear prominently in the tuneful Suite drawn from the opera. So congenial did Brahms find the atmosphere of musical Vienna that he settled there permanently. His mighty Fourth Symphony is generally considered to be one of his finest works, combining drama and passion with a resigned serenity that has gripped audiences since its first performance. Schumann's Cello Concerto is both daring and adventurous, brimming with the lyricism that made him a favourite throughout Europe and which inspired Brahms, his great disciple.
