Based on E R Braithwaite's autobiography and brilliantly adapted by Ayub Khan Din (EAST IS EAST), TO SIR, WITH LOVE is the story of Ricky Braithwaite, an ex-RAF fighter pilot and Cambridge graduate who arrives in London in 1948. Despite his first class degree in electronic engineering, he is turned down for job after job in his chosen profession and discovers the reality of life as a black man in post-war England. Taking the only job he can get, Ricky begins his first teaching post, in a tough but progressive East End school run by the enlightened headmaster 'Florian'.

The determined teacher turns teenage rebelliousness into self respect, contempt into consideration and hate into love - and on the way, Ricky himself learns that he has more in common with his students than he had realised.

Made into a major film in 1967 starring Sidney Poitier and featuring a song made famous by Lulu, this new stage adaptation is peppered with the songs and dance of the late 40's; a time of austerity like our own where love, inspiration and hope win through against all the odds.

Matthew Kelly plays Florian.  He is one of the UKs best-loved actors and winner of a Best Actor Olivier Award for the Touring Consortium's production of Of Mice and Men, he has been widely acclaimed for television and theatre performances including Waiting for Godot with Ian McKellen, Troilus and Cressida at The Globe and his shattering performance in the TV drama Cold Blood. He joins Ansu Kabia as Ricky.

Vintage Fair

Saturday 9th November 2013
12noon-5pm

To Sir with Love is an inspiring tale of courage and hope. The brand new drama coming to the Alhambra Theatre in November will transport the audience back to the 1940's when the original story was set.

On Saturday 9 November Bradford Theatres will host a vintage fair in celebration of the 1940's - Free event open to all.

A selection of stallholders provided by Rose & Brown Vintage will be selling vintage fashion and homewares from the 1920's to the 1980's, featuring some fabulous 40's pieces, including hats, bags, cufflinks and kitchenalia.  www.roseandbrownvintage.co.uk

Bradford College students will be doing hair and make-up demonstrations of the post war look; hair in pin curls and the victory roll, lots of red lipstick and minimal eye make-up. We will be looking for willing volunteers!

There will be Lindy-hop dancing, demonstrated by Swinging Sue's Dancing School and you can enjoy a range of sandwiches and cakes with a 1940's twist.

This event is open to everyone but while you are in the 1940's mood you will not want to miss To Sir With Love. This extraordinary true story is packed with songs and dance of the 1940s and 50s. The Saturday matinee starts at 2.30pm.
