Further info
In this concert, the orchestra is led by its exciting principal guest conductor, the Norwegian maestro Terje Mikkelsen, who has a flourishing career in Russia, Europe and the Far East. Maestro Mikkelsen is well qualified to direct two masterpieces of Scandinavian music, Grieg's evocative Suite of music for Ibsen's masterpiece Peer Gynt, and Sibelius's fiery Violin Concerto, in which the soloist is the brilliant young Russian Alena Baeva, who has already achieved great success at major violin competitions in Moscow and Warsaw. Rachmaninov's richly romantic Second Symphony completes this exceptional programme, which will display the virtuosity of this great orchestra to the full.
