Further info
In a concert of all-English music the Hallé, conducted by Cristian Mandeal, will open with Vaughan William's rumbustious overture to the Greek comedy 'The Wasps'.
Pride of place goes to Sir William Walton's First Symphony. First performed in 1935 and drawing on both Beethoven and Sibelius for inspiration, this work is a landmark of English composition and represents the peak of Walton's symphonic thinking. Soloist in Elgar's elegiac Cello Concerto is the distinguished British musician Colin Carr, who has made this Concerto very much his own.
