Shostakovich Symphony No 5 (47')

The evening opens with Verdi's compelling La Forza del Destino overture. Artistic director of the Hallé, Sir Mark Elder will bring his deep operatic experience to bear in the Overture to Verdi's opera, which vividly portrays the drama of one of Verdi's most powerful operas.

Three times winner of a Classic BRIT award and featured artist in the BBC Last Night of the Proms in 2009, Alison is one of Britain’s greatest musical talents, and has one of the busiest diaries in the classical music world. She will perform Haydn’s popular Trumpet Concerto, one of his best known works, alongside Gershwin’s hauntingly beautiful Someone To Watch Over Me and a trumpet showstopper, Piazzola’s Libertango.

The concert will come to a close with Shostakovich's 5th Symphony. Composed in 1937 in response to Stalin's criticism levelled at Shostakovich after the first performance of his opera, Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk.  This ironic apology has become Shostakovich's most performed symphony, loved by audiences the world over because of the span of its emotional range.  Today it is recognised as one of the composer's finest works.

This is a change to the advertised programme & soloist. Cutomers who have already booked for this concert have been sent a letter 20.9.13 advising them of this change.
