ALHAMBRA THEATRE MAKES PANTO MAGIC COME ALIVE FOR LOCAL DEAF CHILDREN
Bradford Theatres continue to provide the best in access services to theatre goers for shows at the Alhambra Theatre, including the annual pantomime. This is something they have been doing for over twenty-five years. Children from The Leeds Deaf Children's Society will be treated to a very special inclusive performance of Aladdin – The Magical Pantomime Adventure at the Alhambra Theatre this Sunday 26 January.
This is the third Sign Language Interpreted performance that the Alhambra Theatre has provided for this year’s panto, Aladdin. The first two interpreted performances during the run were on 19 December and 3 January, and the one on Sunday 26 January has been specially provided for children and their families from The Leeds Deaf Children’s Society.
Louise McNamara, Secretary for The Leeds Deaf Children’s Society says:
“This is our third year of coming to the Alhambra Theatre in Bradford to see the pantomime, partly because of the Alhambra staff being so helpful and accommodating in assisting us to organise and carry out this trip. In addition, the feedback we have had regarding this annual visit is always amazing and the children seem to enjoy it more and more each year. This year we have 160 deaf children and their families coming along.”
Over recent years, Bradford Theatres have been presented with awards for their access provision, including twice for the Theatrical Management Association (TMA) Award for Most Welcoming Theatre and twice for the Welcome to Yorkshire White Rose Awards for the category of Access For All.
Adam Renton, General Manager Bradford Theatres, says:
“Access is at the heart of Bradford Theatres; it is our belief that everybody should experience the joys of panto. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to show our commitment to making our performances accessible by adding a specific performance for the children from The Leeds Deaf Children’s Society.”
The theatre has already provided an audio described performance for blind and visually impaired customers for Aladdin. As well as the three signed performances provided for Deaf, deafened and hard of hearing patrons, there was a captioned performance last weekend.
Bradford Theatres provide a regular programme of access assisted performances for most of the shows at the Alhambra Theatre. General Manager, Adam Renton, heads up the Bradford Theatres Access Group, a user group made up of individuals who want to help Bradford Theatres make improvements to their access service provision and who also run training sessions for theatres staff.
