Bradford Theatres Nominated for National Awards

Bradford Theatres have received a nomination in the prestigious Theatrical Management Association Awards, to be announced later this week.  The awards bestow national recognition to excellent professional standards amongst theatres across the UK.

The Theatrical Management Association (TMA) is the leading association of organisations involved in the production and presentation of the performing arts, and its annual awards celebrate the very best in British theatre, opera and dance.  The scope of the awards includes Management Awards in order to honour creative excellence amongst theatre companies and venues.

The nomination for Bradford Theatres comes for an award in the ‘Achievement in Marketing’ category. This award recognises the achievements of a TMA member company, theatre, arts centre or venue in developing and undertaking an original and successful marketing initiative, PR or marketing campaign. The award also seeks to promote the place of marketing in the overall business success of the performing arts and to spread best practice.

The nomination for ‘Achievement in Marketing’ is for the campaign supporting the first ever Bradford Theatres’ Bradford & District Schools Choir Competition which was devised and presented in-house under the brand name of ‘BD1 LiVE Goes Choral with the Bradford & District Schools Choir Competition 2010.’

Jane Glaister, Bradford Council’s Director of Culture, Tourism and Sport said:

“I’m thrilled that the Alhambra Theatre and St. George’s Hall have been nominated for this award and that Bradford Theatres have been recognised nationally.  Our aim is always to exceed expectations in providing a high-quality service to the public, visiting production companies and our partners.  I am very pleased that our efforts in doing this have been recognised within the industry and at a national level.”

The campaign successfully attracted 13 Primary Schools in the district to participate in the competition with 700 pupils performing; and over 1,600 parents attending the heats and final event, including 1,200 first-time attenders at the venue.

Adam Renton, General Manager Bradford Theatres says :

“I’m delighted to receive this nomination in recognition of the skills and expertise that the marketing staff have applied to their work at the Alhambra Theatre and St. George’s Hall.  Bradford Theatres are receiving venues only and do not normally develop in-house productions, but due to the lack of suitable product in the market place at that time, we decided to pursue this avenue.

The event was successful on many levels, not least with providing a platform on which Primary School pupils could build self-confidence through singing but it also encouraged community cohesion through families and utilised the City’s venues to maximum effect.”

Bradford Theatres are in a short-list of three and face competition from Hull Truck Theatre and Liverpool Everyman.  The winners will be announced at the TMA Annual Lunch in London on Thursday 20 May.

Bradford Theatres have been successful over the past 4 years in their participation in the TMA Awards: winners in 2005 for ‘Achievement in Marketing’ and ‘Most Welcoming Theatre’; nominee for ‘Achievement in Marketing’ in 2006 and 2008; and winners for ‘Most Welcoming Theatre’ in 2009.
