Led by Bradford Theatres’ Heritage Learning Officer Penny Green, this is a wonderful opportunity to hear about the ground-breaking cinema history of St George’s Hall and view film footage of Bradford from the early 1900s.

During the tour participants will discover how the manager of St George’s Hall in 1900, Sydney H.Carter was a pioneer in cinema. Moving pictures were first shown at the venue in 1896 and from the early 1900s films were regularly screened there. Sydney H.Carter eventually bought St George's Hall and the venue was run as a cinema for over 20 years.

The tour will feature actors playing characters from the cinema era and a chance to sit in the stunning auditorium to recreate the experience of audiences from 1902 by viewing British Film Institute Mitchell & Kenyon film footage of Bradfordians from that time.
