The Hallé and Sir Mark Elder Return to St George's Hall, Bradford

The concert begins with Vaughan Williams’ Norfolk Rhapsody No.1. As the title suggests, the piece evokes the Norfolk countryside and this can be heard in the sweeping string melodies interchanging with English folk songs and ebullient dance passages.

Huw Watkins’s Symphony No.2 won a South Bank Sky Arts Award for its premiere during the Hallé’s 2021 Digital Season. Watkins hoped it would ‘challenge and entertain’ both players and listeners and it is a real treat to bring this new piece to Bradford audiences.

Grammy-award-winning violinist Augustin Hadelich is an international superstar who joins us to perform Brahms’ Violin Concerto. Augustin’s own recording of the piece received a lavish review in Gramophone for his ‘richly characterised and subtly coloured account’ of this concerto. Brahms wrote the piece in the idyllic scenery of Wörthersee in Austria where, he quipped, “melodies were so abundant he had to take care not to tread on them”.
